Sanok History Museum – Zdzisław Beksiński Collection

Zdzisław Beksiński is inseparably connected with Sanok and its Historical Museum (Muzeum Historyczne w Sanoku), although paradoxically he had few solo displays there. The first work was bought by the museum in 1964, but the first exhibition took place in 1968. His works form a part of the museum’s permanent exhibitions. In 1982 the museum presented an exhibition based on its own collection and the pictures loaned from the people of Sanok. The Sanok Historical Museum has often loaned its collection to other museums for exhibition.

Almost all works, being in the collection of the Sanok Historical Museum, were chosen by the artist as the most significant in his career. They were to represent him the best in this museum. At the end of the life, the artist gave a deposit of the paintings and drawings from recent years, supplementing the collection again with the works identified as important for his creativity. Zdzisław Beksiński was brutally murdered in his Warsaw apartment on 21 February 2005. The Historical Museum have become the sole heir of the artist, according to his will, taking several thousand works, including photographs, drawings, graphics and paintings.

In 2006 in The National Museum in Gdansk was arranged a great posthumous retrospective of Beksiński, covering the entire section of the artistic creativity. All exhibited works came from the collection of Sanok museum. We make efforts to enlarge the space of an exhibition through the reconstruction of the southern wing of the castle for several years. It will enable visitors access to the entire artistic heritage, archive and the reconstructed Warsaw studio of the deceased.

In autumn 2011, after the reconstruction of the southern wing of the castle, the arrangement of a dedicated Zdzisław Beksiński gallery commenced.

The Historical Museum in Sanok owns the largest collection of works of Zdzisław Beksiński. The collection contains several thousand paintings,  reliefs, sculptures, drawings, graphics and photographs. The works of the artist will be on display in the permanent Zdzislaw Beksinski gallery as of Spring of 2012. Zdzisław Beksiński was murdered in his Warsaw apartment on 21 February 2005. The Historical Museum have become the sole heir of the Artist, according to his will.
