Born in Felixdorf, Lower Austria, Otto Rapp lived and was educated in Vienna, where later he worked as a clerk in the Transport and Insurance Business. After completing service in the Austrian Air Force, he traveled throughout Europe, eventually settling in Stockholm, Sweden. As a painter Otto was initially self taught, spending time studying in the various Galleries and Museums. In Vienna, Otto was often ‘hanging out’ at the Akademie der Bildenden Kuenste, where he admired the work of the “Wiener Schule des Phantastischen Realismus” represented there by the Professors Ernst Fuchs, Rudolf Hausner and Arik Brauer. In 1968 he emigrated to Canada, and then later entered the UofL Fine Arts Department graduating in 1982 with a Bachelor in Fine Art. He worked for the railway until his retirement in 2006.
In January 2009, Otto started a Private Network of Visionary Artists on the Ning Platform with a handful of friends. Since then, the membership has steadily grown and includes some of the very best Visionary Artists. Many of these artists had been friends for decades, others are new to the fold. In September 2009, Otto Rapp opened a virtual gallery, “Visionary Art Gallery“, to showcase the work of the network members. Then in 2010 he completed and published the “The Visionar Art Year Book 2010 – 2011” to extend the group beyond a virtual presence.
In 2011, Otto relocated to his homeland Austria, where he was quickly became very active in participating and documenting the lively circle of Vienna Fantastic Artists. In the Autumn of that year he took up studio space at the Palais Palffy in the heart of Vienna where the Phantasten Museum is.
